The story begins with Evakdor Hafdin, the Trusted One and leader of Latabat, rushing through his palace as the walls crumble around him. This opening action scene reveals the background behind the screenplay’s conflict, seeing as it allows the audience to witness how Evakdor is clearly perturbed and agitated, and how there is monumental physical destruction. There is also a part of this opening scene where Evakdor consults an obsidian crystal ball, revealing snippets of flashbacks and past conflicts that will impact the journey in the current-time of the story.

Following the introduction of the Trusted One and the conflict, the screenplay moves into a series of somewhat short scenes that follow each of the main characters. Dergek, Plurmef, Flook, Renege, and then Clanas are shown individually as they go about their daily lives– illustrating who each character is as a person and what their backgrounds are in life– and each scene ends with their usual activities being interrupted by the Bailieft of their cavern. This interruption is characterized by the Bailiefts handing each of the travelers, in turn, a scroll commanding they report to the Palace of Labar to meet with the Trusted One, which further illustrates the development of conflict in the story.

Towards the conclusion of ACT 1, the travelers finally meet one another in Labar (the capital city of Latabat) in the early morning when they report to the Palace to be told their official assignment by the Trusted One himself.
